1958 Edsel: Poor Car But Great Planter.
1958 Edsel: Poor Car But Great Planter.

Here's a tie to how this same Edsel looked in 1959. I took this picture with my Brownie Hawkeye when I was thirteen. farm2.static.flickr.com/1286/544933741_8e82112e81.jpg A bit busy today and tomorrow, but will try to stay everyone's stream. Thanks for your patience When my stepfather first met my mother in 1959, he was driving a brand new 1958 Ford Edsel. At that time it was touted as being far in the lead of its time. The big feature was the ability of the driver to shift gears by pushing buttons on a touch pad in the centre of the steering wheel. After a few years the Edsel was wild. It had become an embarrassment to Ford. The button shift did not live up to its potential, and was notorious for losing its timing. It sometimes took up to five seconds from the on occasion you pushed a button until the time the transmission shifted, usually with a jolting 'thunk'. Further, the Edsel was an overly heavy car, even in an age of heavy cars. I did dig it a fair bit over a ten year...

Old Ebbitt Grill
Old Ebbitt Grill

The Old Ebbitt Grill, Washington’s oldest, most red-letter saloon, was founded in 1856. According to legend, innkeeper William E. Ebbitt bought a boarding house at that time, but no one today can pinpoint its exact discovery. It was most likely on the edge of present-day Chinatown, somewhere near the MCI Center. As a boarding house, the Ebbitt guest list read like a Who’s Who of American Experience. President McKinley is said to have lived there during his tenure in Congress. Presidents Grant, Andrew Johnson, Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt and Harding presumably refreshed themselves at its stand-around bar. Each table in the Ebbitt was graced by a blue history card that read: "Many other famous statesmen, naval and military heroes, too numerous to indicate here, have been guests of the house." Evolving to a higher form, Old Ebbitt became Washington’s first known saloon. And as the years passed, it moved to a reckon of new locations. By the early 20th century, it had found its...

1924 Hispano-Suiza Grill
1924 Hispano-Suiza Grill

1924 Hispano-Suiza Paragon H6C 'Tulipwood' Torpedo In 1924 the 'Tulipwood' Torpedo was commissioned by André Dubonnet who, at the age of 26, was an accomplished aviator and rececar driver. The Dubonnet kinsmen had amassed a fortune from the aperitifs and cognacs that continue to bear the family name. Dubonnet contracted the Nieuport Aviation Company to build a lightweight main part suitable for both racing and touring. Nieuport craftsmen formed a frame of wooden ribs measuring up to 3/4-inch thick which were covered with 1/8-inch unintelligent veneer. Strips of tulipwood of uneven thickness and length were fastened to the veneer with thousands of brass rivets. The body was then sealed, sanded and varnished; when fully equipped, the substance was to have weighed approximately 160 pounds. The torpedo tail enclosed a 46-gallon gas tank for long distance racing. In 1924 Dubonnet entered the Hispano-Suiza in the Sicillian Targa Florio and he finished 6th, he also finished 5th in the Coppa Florio and...
