Another Italian restaurant aperture on the Hill isn’t the most groundbreaking development in St. Louis dining, of course. But Leonardo’s Kitchen & Wine Bar is significant not for the cuisine it serves, but for those serving it. Rich and Terri LoRusso are the eponymous owners of the prized LoRusso’s Cucina, and their new venture, named for their grandson, installs... Specifically, Leonardo’s occupies an old gas station at the corner of Macklind and Bischoff avenues. ) Though it calls itself a wine bar, Leonardo’s looks and feels like a neighborhood sandwich against. The menu focuses on sandwiches and pizzas. In the former group, you need only look at the first two selections to find what are certain to become Leonardo’s signature dishes. The Italian beef ($8) is fat with cut down-sliced beef bathed in its own jus, spiced with giardiniera and gilded with melted provolone. Then there is the Salami de Testa ($8) — a bold offering, given that the legendary Gioia’s Deli, illustrious for its own salami made with hog’s-head meat, is right up the street. Leonardo’s serves its thick slices of hot salami with grilled onions and peppers, pepper-jack cheese and brown mustard. I could’ve done without the mustard, or at least as much as the kitchenette spread across my sandwich. It distracted from the salami’s own earthy and mildly spicy flavor. Still, this is a good sandwich. Leonardo’s ventures into bar-and-grill territory with associated results. The chicken wings ($8) are crisp, and the hot-chile sauce delivers a good balance of sweetness and heat. The burger ($7. 50 forthright, $8. 50 with cheese) is a half-pound patty that the kitchen broils until deeply charred. It needs a little less char and, crucially, an alternative to have it cooked medium-rare or even medium. Sandwiches come with your choice of cole slaw, crisp housemade chips or thick, sort-of spiral-cut french fries. Few kitchens can on the barrel-head both a crisp exterior and pillowy interior. Leonardo’s pulls it off. The kitchen also serves toasted ravioli ($8) that, if not a reinvention, are a welcome break from the wonted. The breading is lighter, the ground-beef filling less pasty. Leonardo’s splits its pizza menu into red and white. Tomato sauce is the base for the departed, garlic-spiked olive oil (or, in one case, pesto) for the latter. The crust is modestly chewy and somewhere between Neapolitan and New York in thickness — an unobtrusive fix for toppings. The red-sauce pizzas provide a straightfoward pleasure: pepperoni with roasted red peppers ($13), meatballs ($13) and even the hot salami with sausage and bacon (the Piggy, $14). The wine series is brief, with six Italian whites and seven... The name notwithstanding, though, it’s best not to think of Leonardo’s as a wine bar — just as it’s best not think of it as yet another Italian restaurant, but a more open way to enjoy the LoRussos’ food.
