ECU's deep receiving corps looking for a banner year, even without ...

Source: ACC Insider

GREENVILLE – The large banner that was once hung behind the end zone at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium commemorating Justin Hardy’s achievement as the all-time FBS leader in pass receptions has been moved inside the Murphy Center to East Carolina’s... It’s a tangible sign of the turnover that has taken place in the Pirates’ receiving corps. Not only have Hardy and his 387 catches moved on to the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, but fellow 1,000-yard receiver Cam Worthy and his big play ability are gone, too. In most programs, such losses would mean a total rebuilding job of the passing game, especially with a new quarterback factoring into the mix. Thanks to an offensive scheme that utilizes four receivers at a time and rotates players two-deep regardless of the situation or opponent, the Pirates’ receiving cupboard is anything but bare as they look ahead to the rapidly approaching 2015 season. “That’s a credit to our coaching staff and recruiting,” junior Isaiah Jones said Saturday at ECU’s annual media day event. A preseason Biletnikoff Award candidate whose father Robert was an All-America linebacker for the Pirates from 1988-91, caught 81 passes for 830 yards and five touchdowns last season — numbers that would have made him the primary receiving threat... “We’ve got highly recruited guys, but there’s nobody who is going to blow you out of the water,” Jones said. It’s going to be phenomenal to see everything come together. “We’re sorry to see Justin and Cam go. They are two phenomenal athletes that come along once in a blue moon. Among the best of them is New Hanover High graduate Trevon Brown, who was putting together a solid freshman season last year before it was cut short by a knee injury that forced him to miss the final five games of the regular season. At a solidly built 6-foot-2, 210-pounds and fully healthy again, Brown is the most likely candidate to step into the deep threat role vacated by Worthy. His average of 18. 9 yards per catch was actually the best on the team in 2014. Of his 14 catches, four went for touchdowns. In addition to Jones and Brown, the Pirates also return veteran receivers Davon Grayson (25 catches, 257 yards), Jimmy Williams (22 catches, 254 yards, 1 TD) and Bryce Williams (18 catches, 237 yards, 4 TDs). Another New Hanover star, DaQuan Barnes, who caught nine passes for 103 yards and a score in 2013 before missing all last season with a back injury, should also factor into the mix of a deep, talented receiving rotation. “Those guys need to step up,” said Dave Nichol, who served as ECU’s outside receivers coach before being promoted to offensive coordinator this season. “They’ve been in big stadiums, they’ve played and made catches in big games. Their biggest challenge may end up being the adjustment to a new quarterback, presumably sophomore Kurt Benkert, thanks to the departure of three-year starter Shane Carden. It’s a process Benkert said began long before the opening day of preseason camp on Thursday. “You take what you learned in the summer and try to translate it into camp, because when the pads go on the timing changes a little bit,” Benkert said. “Each day you have to find just a little more to make sure you’re on the same page. Even though Hardy and Worthy are no longer around, their influence continues to have an impact on those who learned from watching, practicing and playing alongside two of the best receivers in Pirates’ history. “Taking advice from Cam and learning how to run routes was just amazing,” Brown said. Now it’s my chance and when the ball is in the air, I’m going to go get it. “I feel like we’re going to do some big things. We have a lot of the same weapons and we’re getting older, more experienced and we’re working harder than we’ve ever worked before.

"Old Fashioned British Sweets From Your Childhood"
"Old Fashioned British Sweets From Your Childhood"

1953: Sweet rationing ends in Britain Children all over Britain have been emptying out their piggy-banks and heading straight for the nearest sweet-shop as the first unrationed sweets went on sale today. Toffee apples were the biggest sellers, with sticks of nougat and liquorice strips also disappearing fast. One firm in Clapham Common gave 800 children 150lbs of lollipops during their midday break from school, and a London factory opened its doors to hand out free sweets to all comers. Adults joined in the sugar frenzy, with men in the City queuing up in their lunch breaks to buy boiled sweets and to enjoy the luxury of being able to buy 2lb boxes of chocolates to take home for the weekend. Do you remember your favourite childhood sweets and the excitement of going to the local sweet shop and choosing from the vast array of jars on the shelves full of colourful mouth watering temptations? They were weighed by the quarter on a big old fashioned metal scale pan and packaged...

Ship of Fools: Obama's Intimates and Advisors By Mac Fuller The following thumbnails describe a very small sampling of the locust horde of Leftist bureaucrats President Barack Hussein Obama has deliberately chosen to help him grasp the helm of America's ship of state, strip it from the American people, and steer it hard to port. The Obama Administration is plainly subverting democracy in America, wildly careening our previous 230-year history of democracy so dangerously Leftward that we are in terrible danger of sinking. In these thumbnails, three dominant themes of the Obama Administration emerge - fanatically uncompromising anti-capitalism, dangerous and blatant anti-Semitism, and the societal inculcation of dogmatic Leftist, Socialist "faith" through indoctrination of American school children beginning with the earliest ages - a practice instituted by Lenin in Communist Russia and now pounding its way into the American academic mainstream through the prolific...
